About my teaching

Different people have different learning styles. Some are visual learners; they need to see it to understand it. Others are auditory learners. For them, hearing is important. Still others are kinesthetic learners who have to DO things to master a skill. People like me are analytical learners. We learn best when we figure things out, break them down, and make associations.

In addition, people learn languages for different reasons. Some need it for work. Others need it for travel, and for many, it's just a hobby. One person might need more conversation, and another may benefit from writing and grammar. Languages, of course, involve the traditional "Four Skills" of reading, writing, speaking and listening, so a well-balanced approach works well, but I can concentrate on any one of them.

A good teacher knows how to recognize and adapt lessons to his/her students' needs. There is little use in teaching only grammar lessons to verbal learner who needs conversational practice. Nor is it good to have an entirely spoken lesson with a visual learner.

I can tailor my lessons to any of the above learning styles and purposes. The biggest advantage of private/small group tutoring is that flexibility.

But I'm terrible at languages!

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard this....

It's true: languages are not easy to learn. They take time and dedication, and they can be extremely frustrating, especially when you don't have the opportunity to practice. You can study for years and still feel like you've learned almost nothing. What's more, it's frustrating to be an adult with complex thoughts that you want to express, yet you have the vocabulary of a three-year-old.

However, it CAN be done. I consider myself living proof of that. BECAUSE I'm a language LEARNER as well as a language TEACHER, I understand what it's like to have to struggle with getting out those sentences, with understanding the fast speakers, with wrapping your head around that word order. I feel your pain! I had to learn it too!

I'm not going to lie to you and say it won't be hard work to acheive fluency--it will. There's no one magic formula. However, I CAN give you explanations and help you to understand the whys and hows of the languages in question.
